"Worried About Tomorrow"

This portfolio provides examples of my work over the a period of 4 months from October 2010 to January 2011. It explores the following key themes: portraiture, and a sense of place in urban/rural environments which I interpreted through different viewpoints, artistic approaches and materials. Observation was important. Sometimes mundane or insignificant object such as traffic lights provided an important compositional focus. 

In my portraiture the use of bold colours has been significant to convey feelings and identity, enabling me to explore portraits through increasingly abstract forms and experimental mark making. I did some research by looking at the work of  Lauren Olitski, and her earthy colours and unique texture. An earlier inspirational voluntary trip to  Ghana also made me look at Chris Ofili. 

I started experimenting with small-scale abstract pieces and then developed my techniques via a portrait form. From this I developed portraiture into a much bolder form and larger scale painting on the theme "Fear of the future". I a painting of my sister I used scale and colour to explore emotion and feelings to create a sense of ambiguity. On the surface the use of bold colours and large scale creates an impression of confidence, however, underneath I wanted to portray a sense of vulnerability. It was important that I captured my sister's bubbly personality through these techniques, however I wanted to capture the emotions that she was going through at that time. 

Art absorbs and fascinates me, it also allows me to share and communicate my creative inventions with others. Art is an important part of my personality, it helps me to express my feeling and thoughts. Looking at other artists work inspires my own work by looking at things in a different perspective.
